Chunox Village in northern Belize, relies on fishing as the primary livelihood for its residents. The Chunox Fishermen’s Association (CFA) was established to represent the rights and interests of fishers, promote sustainable fishing practices, and enhance the well-being of its members. With 150 active members, the community remains vulnerable to economic instability due to increased fishing pressures, climate change, and a dependency on a single income source.
This project seeks to address these challenges by strengthening the CFA’s capacity to support its members and foster economic resilience within Chunox.
To strengthen the resilience and sustainability of the fishing community in Chunox by strengthening local governance, fostering sustainable fishing practices, and diversifying livelihoods, ensuring economic stability, environmental stewardship, and improved well-being for current and future generations.
Project Objectives:
To strengthen CFA’s governance and ensure transparent, accountable management by maintaining effective leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement by December 2025.
To construct and fully operationalize a multipurpose building as a centralized hub for capacity building, meetings, and community activities by July 2025.
To promote sustainable fisheries and support livelihood diversification by delivering trainings to 25 CFA members by January 2026.
Expected Outputs:
Transparent governance and effective project oversight is maintained, with a project coordinator hired, quarterly meetings conducted, and regular updates provided to members throughout the project period.
A multi-purpose building is constructed and operational by July 2025, fully equipped to host 50 participants for training, meetings, and community events, with rental protocols in place to generate revenue for CFA.
At least 25 participants completed entrepreneurship and financial management training, creating microbusiness plans and receiving investments in the form of equipment to develop their business.
10 fishers trained in sustainable fishing practices including catch log data collection, improved compliance with fisheries regulations.
